Does anybody know of any good work books or websites with exercises to help me learn to improvise jazz solos?
I am an intermediate level guitarist and pianist with an extensive knowledge of music theory, but without access to a solid jazz teacher. I understand how jazz harmonies are produced and things like that; I also have a decent understanding of what appregios and scales to play over certain chords and the like from the book, Jazz Theory Resources by Bert Ligon, but I am incredibly lacking in hands on experience with actual jazz improvization. I need a resource that takes a musician step by step to help them build a vocabulary and understanding of different devices used in improvisation. One that progresses from simple progressions to more complicated, while asking the musician at first to perform simple tasks, like running through the scales and then later in the book asking them to focus on loftier more abstract or technical goals like motif development or coloring outside the lines or sequencing or anticipation. Does anybody know of a resource that can lead me where I want to be. Oh, and also, does anybody know of a good book that focuses solely on sequences?
