How to enable num lock on a MacBook?

I have the new white MacBook. I want to type in the alt code for a lightning bolt (which I'm not sure works so if anyone has one please say so), but I don't know how to enable num lock on the laptop. There's no num lock on and I dont know if I have to press F6 or what so if anyone has an idea please say so. Thanks :)
