Liquid Crystal Synthesis?

Can anybody tell me (or give me a link) to a synthetic method for creating the kind of liquid crystals you find in LCDs ie mobile phones etc? As in, how are they actually made? NB: I'm not interested in how the display is put together...it's the actual molecular strucutre of the liquid crystals I'm interested in. Thanks
