My computer shuts off when I close the screen.?

I have the settings under power options to when I close the screen to sleep. It use to work but now all of the sudden it decided when I close the lid to shut off improperly so when i open the screen again it asks if I want to start in safemode because of improper shut down. So i decided i'd just click sleep before i close the screen. I did that but it did the exact same thing and did an improper shut down. What is happening!!???
