A pelvic ultrasound usually consists of two parts: the first part they scan on top of your abdomen to see your uterus and ovaries. For this, they need an extremely full bladder to push the bowel out of the way and provide a "window" to see the uterus/ovaries. For the second part, you empty your bladder and a transl probe is inserted to get a closer, more detailed look. It is a lot like a tampon, and should only be uncomfortable, not painful. It really isn't bad, and the whole exam usually only takes about 20 minutes.
